Who’s Spanking The Rankings?: The ADCC Countdown… & CJI Too I Guess? 👇

Timer from emailcountdowntimer.com

With less than a month to go now before grappling’s own wildest Vegas weekend in history, we all wait with bated breath to see what tricks Mo and Craig have left in the bag to win the hearts, minds and viewing eyes of the BJJ world…

CJI announced this week that both divisions are now full and ready to rumble! However, with that win in the books, Craig also lost a pretty big one for CJI this week due to Mikey Musumeci's withdrawal from the super fight plan as his potential opponent wasn’t interested.

The good ol’ internet rumour mill most commonly put the opponent as either Rafa Mendes or Marcelo Garcia, with Mikey saying - “we were attempting to make a legendary match that would have probably been the most viewed Jiu-Jitsu match ever, but it fell through in the end.” Oh well. Maybe next year? 🤷

While Craig lost a man this round, Mo gained a few with invites going out to 3 quite large ladz - now rounding out the -99KG and +99KG ADCC divisions. And with the CJI brackets now full, Mo can finally sleep easy knowing none will jump ship tomorrow morning.

To wrap it all up for now, Uncle Renzo reckons he knows the deep dark secrets behind who’s actually fronting the $2+ million in cash for CJI, but is playing his cards close and won’t reveal anything other than “it is not Mark Zuckerberg”…

Fine. Have it your way Renzo … the mystery lives on.

QUESTION TIME

What Keeps You Up At 2 am?

  • Throwing sand in someone’s eyes😵.

  • A kick to the groin🤢.

  • Biting the ear like it’s a crisp apple🍎.

I think we can all agree - no matter what you’re up to, these are downright dirty moves.

But when it comes to dirty moves in jiu-jitsu, well, the jury is still out on that one. ⚖️ There are plenty of legal BJJ techniques that might get you the win in a competition - but will likely lose you a friend or two in your home gym #buthowelsedoyoutrainthem?

Many of us love the ‘dark arts’ and feel that these kinds of techniques are all fair play … I mean after all, it is about learning self-defence, and you can just tap if you don’t like it, right?

Others think there’s just really no need to dig your elbow into the ribs or put your hand over someone’s mouth …

So, tell us - is it all fair in love and war? Should we train the ‘dirty stuff’ or remain a bit more civil? 👇

…Quick note before you vote: We aren't talking about 'illegal career-ending moves’ here like this one - we are referring to the legal but savage submissions. Some friendly favourites to inspire you might include neck cranks, wrist locks, mother’s milk, knee on neck, choking the face & smother taps … just to name a few

This week’s big question ⬇️

Are You Happy To Train The 'Dirty Moves' In BJJ?

The last poll’s results:

Last time we asked you - “Have You Ever Had To Take Time Off The Mats Due To Injury?

⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️ 😎 - Nope. Haven't copped any injuries at all ... yet

🟨⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️ 😏 - I've had a few minor scrapes, but nothing has taken me off the mats!

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩😔 - Yep. Unfortunately had to spend some time on the sidelines

It appears none of us have made it this far without any damage ... and most of us have had to take some ‘forced time off’ with a scrape or two … ahh, the gentle art, huh!?

Also, this is the perfect way to tell someone you’re a Gi player without telling them you’re a Gi player 😂👇

The Weekly Fix

Last time with The Weekly Fix, we looked at some tips and tricks we can all bring to our training to reduce the likelihood of getting injured.

However, all the tips and tricks in the world sometimes aren’t enough, and we can unfortunately still end up copping a hit.

That doesn’t always mean we are down and out with no way to play though! Let’s have a look at this week’s fix🔧👇

Staying On The Mats With A Torn Meniscus

Carrying the caveat of ‘always be sure to seek medical advice’ - in this video Joey runs us through:

  • His own BJJ-related knee dramas and how he deals with it

  • Some considerations for your BJJ style and gameplan after/during a knee injury 🦵

  • Good ways to continue your strength and stability work while managing it 💪

Injuries like a meniscus tear can be pretty devastating when they first happen - however, depending on the severity, you’ll likely be able to find your way back if you do the right things and make a few adjustments.

WHATS HAPPENING?

This Weeks Tap’s , Nap’s 🥱 & Snap’s

We hear you. Time is money 💰 - you want your BJJ news, but you’ve got sh*t to do 📝those training partners won’t tap themselves.

Let’s get it 👇

1.) WRESTLING & LEGLOCKS 🦵:are arguably 2 of the biggest differentiators (#bigwordclub) when it comes to No-Gi champions at the highest level nowadays.

It’s obvious that if you lack proper skills in either domain, you’re gonna run into a lot of trouble quickly, but on the flip side, if you can become world-class in either (or both) areas then you’re a bona fide troublemaker.

It stands to reason that this year’s ADCC brackets are loaded with athletes who will take you down and/or tear your legs off. Have a look at Flo’s round-up of the 10 best wrestlers and the 10 best leglockers in the mix and see if you agree…

2.) HATE IS A STRONG WORD 🌶️:which plenty of people are happy to throw around when it comes to some of the most disliked grapplers in BJJ history.

From Rousimar Palhares’ not letting go of submissions until he gets that satisfying ‘pop’ - to Erbeth Santos’ using his Gi as a toilet and walking out mid-match … there are plenty of contenders for the crown in this category.

I wouldn’t call this an exhaustive list of unsavoury jiu-jitsu characters, but here’s a quick 10 to get you started more here.

3.) CAULIFLOWER IS A GREAT VEGETABLE 🍽️:that belongs in your bowl and not on your ear.

For us grapplers who don’t view cauliflower ear as a ‘badge of honour’ and are instead keen to keep using headphones like normal people, the solution is to either don some really cool headgear, pray it just doesn’t happen or be prepared to stick a syringe in it if ever needed.

However, if you go down enough internet rabbit holes, you’ll eventually find someone trying to solve the big problems… enter, CauliCureTM. So - does it work? No idea, thankfully, my ears are still smooth, beautifuland cauli-free. Interesting idea though → more here.

The Quick Hitters ⚾️

WHAT’S SO FUNNY?

The Meme Open Mat:

10 years work … and it’s straight back to work!?👇

Can any black belts confirm this rumour plz?…

“Sorry Fido, I need to work on being the best power bottom I can be”…

All in a morning’s work …

You like memes huh!? (of course you do).

Well, we have bucketloads 🪣 of premium, high-grade OG memes for you to share with your BJJ crew, or simply peruse at your scrolling leisure…

LET’S GET TECHNICAL

The Good Option:

Heel hooks, toe holds, kneebars - these are all leg attacks that many of us starting out basically ignore … until … well, honestly, until we realise we probably should’ve been learning them all along.

A straight ankle lock, however, is one leg attack that is commonly taught pretty on - and those that pick it up well can find themselves tearing through white belt competitions and frustrating their team mates to no end.

One of the best ankle collectors on the scene nowadays is the Polish grappler Mateusz Szczeciński - and he gave a 15-minute masterclass at B-Team a few years ago that everyone should lay eyes on, no matter where you are on the journey.

Grab a cuppa ☕️ and notepad 📝 👇

The Not-So-Good Option:

Ankle locks are often considered the little brother in the leg attack family - pesky and annoying but not all that harmful.

But if you’ve ever been ankle-locked properly - you’re probably thinking otherwise. When they are slapped on tight with good breaking mechanics (aka. Szczeciński-style👆), it’s in your best interests to tap-tap-tappy.

Because if you don’t …👇 (Volume up for this one. Actually, you’re probably better off to mute it)
