🥋 BJJ vs Your Life: Where's The Balance?

... and if your No-Gi kit does this, please get a new one.

Welcome back to Tap Nap & Snap - the newsletter that, unlike Gordon Ryan, doesn't give financial advice, but actually delivers value … every … single … week.

Rightio - here’s what we’ve got today:

  • Kade Ruotolo can’t be stopped in any arena.

  • It depends on who you ask, but generally speaking …size matters.

  • This might be the best way to get your blue belt.

QUESTION TIME

What Keeps You Up At 2 am?

Unlike Horse Racing and Professional Roller-CoasteringTM, jiu-jitsu takes in participants and athletes of all different shapes and sizes.

In any given training room, you’ll find the small, nimble and quick athletes matching it with their strong, solid and high-calorie counterparts.

Some of us spend our BJJ careers as the smallest in the room, working that fast, scrappy and highly technical game that makes bigger training partners shake their heads in frustration.

Others play with that methodical pressure-based style that allows them to slow down (and smash) the smaller players who are always zipping from side to side for that quick pass or back take.

So - this week’s question is about where you fall on the size spectrum at your gym. Are you constantly battling giants? Or are you the one everyone looks at when they need "heavy pressure" practice?

Over to you … 👇

This week’s big question

Are you one of the bigger or smaller grapplers in your gym?

The last poll’s results:

Last time, we asked you - “Do you coach any classes at your gym?

🟨🟨🟨🟨⬜️⬜️ 💪 - Yep. You can call me coach.

🟨🟨🟨⬜️⬜️⬜️ 😏 - Not yet, but I'm keen to.

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 🚫 - Nope. I'd rather just train.

It's a bit of a mixed bag here, but most of you guys are keen to turn up, clear your mind and just get to training!

In my experience, there’s a lot to be gained from coaching, but it’s not all sunshine and rainbows - sometimes, there’s just as much to be gained from being able to turn up as a pure student and use that time to work on your own stuff.

BY BULLETPROOF FOR BJJ

The Weekly Fix

Last timewe looked at ways to change the mindset and approach to make sure you newly minted blue belts (or struggling brown belts) don’t disappear on us.

This week, the boys tackle the eternal balance of getting enough jits training in vs overtraining and going backwards… 😬

How Much BJJ Training Is Too Much Training?…

We've all been there – that ‘just one more roll’ or ‘one more session for the week’ mindset that leaves you hobbling into work, struggling to pick up your kids, mainlining coffee and snorting ibuprofen.

So, what's the sweet spot between gains and injuries? Between progress and burnout? Between being a savage on the mats and a functioning human in real life?

Joey & JT break down the idea of optimal training volume, recovery strategies that actually work, and how to know when you're pushing past that fine line between dedication and destruction.

FREAK FOR THE TECHNIQUE

Reverse Side Control To Blue Belt Promotion

This week is less about the technique and more about the finishalthough, he definitely had that reverse side control pressure applied nicely. 👌

From club gradings to podium promotions, I think this has to be one of the best ways to get your blue belt. Nothing like a magic trick to catch you by surprise!
