SUPPORT YOUR BJJ CREATORS
This week, we’re back with the best sleep, fitness, recovery and lifestyle tracker in the game - Whoop. 💪
I’ve had a Whoop on for well over a year now to help me figure out what’s been working, when to go harder, when to dial it back a bit, and when to get some damn sleep! 😮💨
Has it made me a BJJ world champion? No. It doesn’t perform miracles. But has it helped me fine-tune my training, sleep and lifestyle habits so I’m performing better and just generally feeling better? Definitely. ✅
It does a bunch of stuff that can help you improve your BJJ game; the key things that I like most are:
Auto-Detect Your Sessions: WHOOP recognizes Jiu-Jitsu training automatically, logging and giving detailed insights into your heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), and strain levels.
Personalized Recovery Scores: You get daily recovery scores based on your sleep, HRV, and resting heart rate, so you get some guidance on when to push hard and when to rest.
Safe and Secure: You can wear WHOOP comfortably during training with neoprene sleeves, rash guards or undies!
Comprehensive Health Insights: You get all sorts of data on sleep stages, skin temperature, blood oxygen levels, and more to understand your body's readiness and recovery.
If you’ve been thinking about it but aren’t quite sure yet - you can get a 1-month free trial as well before you decide whether it’s for you 👇

QUESTION TIME
What Keeps You Up At 2 am?
As a kid growing up in the 90’s, I used to loooove watching martial arts films of all kinds.
I still remember the constant negotiating with my parents to stay up late on school nights and watch them …
Me: Street Fighter is on tonight! Can I watch it!? Mum: “If it’s too violent and anyone dies, you have to turn it off and go to bed.” … M. Bison proceeds to crack necks in the opening credits … Me: “They’re just sleeping! They’re not dead!”
So yeah, I didn’t actually get to watch a whole lot now that I think about it 🤔 - but I saw enough to be fascinated with martial arts and knew that someday, somehow I’d train something!
Well, despite my childhood enthusiasm, it took a few decades to make it happen (like many of us), but I finally got there and found my way into BJJ. 🔥
At this point, it’s the only martial art I’ve got under my belt - but many at our jiu-jitsu gym have come from all kinds of different martial arts backgrounds, such as kickboxing, MMA & Judo. #sitdownorgetsatdown
So, this week we want to know - are you a BJJ-only martial artist? Or are you a cross-disciplinary weapon? 🔪
This week’s big question ⬇️
Have You Ever / Do You Train Another Martial Art? |
The last poll’s results:

Ahhh, as expected - the classic mid-life crisis bell curve. 🔔 A few of you got in early as youngins, some of you in your 50’s+, which is epic - but most of us found it in our 30s & 40s, likely searching for that personality-defining hobby at the crossroads of #1 run-a marathon, #2 learn to smoke meat/brew beer or #3 start a martial art. Good choice. ✅
WHATS HAPPENING?
This Weeks Tap’s ✋, Nap’s 🥱 & Snap’s 🫰
1.) CJI #2 COULD BE 5x TIMES BIGGER! 📈: if Craig’s screenshot of the $17 million dollars worth of secured funding is to be believed. 🤯
Earlier this week, Craig jumped on the ‘gram to drop the news that he’s here to save us from all the ‘boring ass grappling events’ we are suffering through lately by officially scheduling the second-ever Craig Jones Invitational for August 2025. 🔥
It sounds like it’ll go down at the Thomas & Mack Centre again, but there are hints of more weight classes, bracket + super fight changes & more intergender crossover matches … but, I’m not sure what they can do to top the Craig vs. Gabi spectacle?
Regardless, CJI #1 changed the grappling world forever, and with an extra $14 million dollars in the pocket for the second one, I’m sure it’s going to be special … → more here.
2.) KRON GRACIE IS LOSING FRIENDS QUICKLY 👋: - after his brutal and rather embarrassing UFC loss to Bryce Mitchell this last weekend. 💥
Kron recently had what many call the worst UFC display from a BJJ guy in the modern UFC against Charles Jourdain - largely blaming the BJJ community for too much pressure and his family/coaches for telling him he should only use jiu-jitsu.
He vowed he’d redeem himself next time … and then, he pulled guard and got knocked out. As you’d imagine, he’s copping flak from all angles here, with many fans and high-level fighters shredding him for it, including Gordon Ryan, Renato Moicano, MMA Guru and even his uncle Cesar Gracie.
Kron doesn’t seem the slightest bit upset by all the backlash and has hit back at all the critics… sparking even more criticism ♻️… → more here.
3.) GORDON RYAN CALLS IT A DAY 🌅 : … on his plans for a 2026 ADCC run … *checks sources: social media comment* … allegedly. 🤔
His scheduled opponent, Kaynan Duarte, had a phenomenal ADCC run this year, and after recently beating Roberto Jiminez at WNO 25, Kaynan expressed his doubts about Gordon actually showing up for the 2026 Superfight.
Gordon chimed in with a comment on the interview post, saying, ‘You’re right. I won’t be there. Have fun, everyone ☺️’. So … there you have it - he’s officially pulled out. ✅
With ADCC needing to bounce back hard after Mo Jassim stepped out and generally taking a bit of an L against Craig with CJI - losing their poster boy in Gordon Ryan might not be the best thing for their stock. 📉
Let’s see, though, it’s 2 years away, and anything can happen. It looks like Gordon is busy for now, anyhow, stirring up internet fights all over the place, including this one with Mark Hunt 🤯 … → more here.

The Weekly Fix
Last time, the boys went deep on the importance of getting strong for BJJ so you can stay in the game for the long term. 😎
This week, we dive into how to best handle an injury that sidelines you and puts you off the mats for a bit. 😬
Don’t Let Injury Destroy Your Love For BJJ!
BJJ can be a tough sport. If you’ve been doing it for a bit now, you’ve probably seen a few people who started with you already drop out - and often, it’s when they cop their first big injury. 😔
There’s no denying the first injury that puts you off the mats for a bit can be devastating. It may even leave you wondering - “Do I really want to be rolling around on the floor busting my knees / shoulders / elbows / *insert your injury here*?”
Well, the answer is yes. Yes, you do. BJJ is awesome for many reasons and teaches you many things - including how to deal with adversity and persevere when things get a bit rough.
In the video above ⬆️, the boiz drop some great pointers, tips and tactics on how to think about a bad injury, deal with it and come back from it stronger than ever. 🔥

WHAT’S SO FUNNY?
The Meme Open Mat:
Remember, son, when the going gets tough - you can just quit! 🤓…
You can also complain and do nothing! …
I neeeeeds it…

LET’S GET TECHNICAL
The Good Option:
Sometimes you find something so nasty … nay, so beautiful, that you just can’t ignore it. Inspired by the savage Gianni Grippo, this is a quick trick you can add to your bag if you like getting this head control from mount or side control.
It’s not a long clip, you couldn’t call it ‘highly technical’ - but it’s a great way to lose all of your friends get a quick tap. Grab a cuppa ☕️ and notepad 📝 👇
The Not-So-Good Option:
Every martial art has its traditions that leave many modern students wondering where they fit in and if they are still relevant.
A couple of traditional examples in jiu-jitsu that you may (or may not? ) resist yourself could include the controversial belt promotion gauntlet and the use of the word ‘oss’ in place of … well, every other possible word.
However, any feelings you may have about BJJ’s traditions and their relevance will pale in comparison to whatever hellish tradition this gym is sticking to… 😬👇
