🥋 Gordon Ryan is a seriously terrible actor

... and it's time for you to submit your CJI picks

Welcome back to Tap Nap & Snap - and an especially big sweaty oss to the 100+ mat rats that joined us this week! With grappling’s own mega-weekend just around the corner, this week we ask you submit your picks and tell us who you think the first-ever CJI champs will be…

Rightio - here’s what we’ve got today:

  • Bad training partners, if you don’t know any - it might be you! 😬

  • CJI loses a big fella and needs a replacement - know anyone? 🤔

  • Scissor sweep to the bolo - you up for it? 🤠

Before We Hit The Mats … 🤼

We’ve got some friends that will help you … help us … help you? Seriously though - we love putting out this newsletter, but it is honestly a lot of work.

Simply by checking them out and seeing what’s on offer - you’ll be helping us keep this show on the road - and most likely landing some epic finds for yourself too 😎🙏 ⬇️

XMartial kit out some of the best grapplers in the game - so whether it’s new rashies, shorts, full Gi’s, streetwear, mouthguards, recovery gear or even your own custom designs - they’ve got you covered.

Better yet! ☝️ You can use the code TAPNAPSNAP with them at checkout for 15% off your entire order ✅

Who’s Spanking The Rankings?: The ADCC / CJI Countdown 👇

Timer from emailcountdowntimer.com

We’ve finally cracked the seal on August which is the month we’ve all been waiting for as we are now just over 2 weeks away from the Craig Abu Jones Dhabi Combat Invitational Club. I took the liberty of combining the names of both tournaments to make it easier for everyone. No problems. ✅

The drama between Mo & Craig seems to have finally died down (…for now) and while Mo has gone pretty quiet, Craig has been busy getting inside the head (and heart 🥰) of his Super Fight competitor - Gabi Garcia.

He can’t spend too much time dreaming on Gabi though as the recent withdrawal of Mason Fowler means he now needs to find a replacement to round out the over 80kg category. Despite being no bigger than Nicky Rod’s left foot, Lachlan Giles is getting the push from the crowd and based on his previous work in the ADCC Absolute Division - I’d personally love to see it!

QUESTION TIME

What Keeps You Up At 2 am?

Ladies and Gentleman - this week’s ‘question section’ is mixing it up and going on a little side quest. With the inaugural CJI (and little ol ADCC) mere weeks away - it’s time for you 🫵 to tell us who you think the first-ever CJI winners will be!

“But… but… but - what’s in it for me?” some of you may be screaming violently into your computer…

Well, aside from claiming the eternal bragging rights to picking the first-ever CJI champs, one person who picks ALL 4 winners correctly will score 6 months of BJJ Mental Models premium.

Yep. You’re welcome. 😉 In the event of a tie where a bunch of you channel your inner Mystic Mac, the winner will be whoever got their answers in first, so jump in and submit your responses now!

The last poll’s results:

Last time we asked you - “Are You Happy To Train The 'Dirty Moves' In BJJ?

🟨🟨⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️ 🚫 Nope. There's some stuff you just don't need to do.

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩  For sure. It's a combat sport - if you don't like it, just tap

You savages. Most of you are down for the dirty stuff … but you’re also a bunch of stand-up professionals. Everyone seems to want to keep it playful - which really is the key to not losing all your friends

Yo! Do you have a burning question that you’d like to see hit the polls in an upcoming edition? 👆If so, hit reply and shoot it through - you might just get it featured!

The Weekly Fix

Last newsletter, we looked at what you can do if you’ve risked it for the meniscus. And lost. This week, we head north from the knee and look at dealing with pesky elbow problems and forearm pain👇

Fix Your Forearms For BJJ

Elbows and forearms are common problem areas in BJJ, as we do a lot of tight gripping and heavy pulling (especially in the pyjamas).

In this clip - Joey gives us 3 simple strategies that help to unlock pain areas from wrists right up to shoulders - while also covering everything in between.

I can confirm, these are great techniques to throw into your warmup routine or to hit throughout the day when you need a work break and a good stretch

WHATS HAPPENING?

This Weeks Tap’s , Nap’s 🥱 & Snap’s

We hear you. Time is money 💰 - you want your BJJ news, but you’ve got sh*t to do 📝those training partners won’t tap themselves.

Let’s get it 👇

1.) GORDON IS PRETTY DAMN GOOD AT BJJ :and I’ll watch his instructionals until my eyes hurt - but my god, he is a terrible actor.

In a recent video that is getting roasted to charcoal by BJJ fans everywhere, Gordon dresses up as a hillbilly (his words) and drives down to the US-Mexico border to take a stance against the illegals.

He spends a lot of time describing what comedy is and how he will achieve said comedy before putting on a fake Southern accent and spouting some seriously cringeworthy drivel. Whatever your political opinions might be and your level of love for Gordon - I’ll bet this hurts to watch more here.

2.) MIKEY IS A SPICY MEATBALL 🌶️:and getting spicier every minute. Widely known as one of BJJ’s quirky but nice guys, Mikey is not only winning everything he touches lately, but also now taking the chance to fire a few shots when he can too.

He had a good crack at Gabriel Sousa after tapping him at One 167, told the IBJJF Gi-gang to take a hike and recently threw some covert shade Aljamain Sterling’s way regarding his ‘guard pullers suck’ philosophy. Play nice Kade, you might be the next target for a classic post-match Mikey rant!

3.) “WANNA START FROM STANDING?” 🥋:says the brand new white belt who’s very tall and suspiciously confident on his feet. That’s right - with the Paris 2024 Olympics in full flight, it’s Judo season … so watch yourself out there.

With Jiu-Jitsu still not getting its Olympic call-up, Judo is the estranged family member that we are obliged to support (…also shout out to our super-jacked and pretty weird 3rd cousin, Wrestling).

Anyway, if you want to get your head around a few of the key techniques, check out some of the athletes that will be competing and witness some truly epic ippons - check out this video → right here. (…scroll to 12:35 for a special one if you’re short on time)

WHAT’S SO FUNNY?

The Meme Open Mat:

Guess I’ll be cancelling my gym membership to save costs…

Anyone got $69 plz?…

I’m sorry Lachlan. It’s not you, it’s me…

The bottom tier takes care of all of it really…

You like memes huh!? (of course you do).

Well, we have bucketloads 🪣 of premium, high-grade OG memes for you to share with your BJJ crew, or simply peruse at your scrolling leisure…

LET’S GET TECHNICAL

The Good Option:

Most of the time, our training should probably be based on diving deep into topic areas and focusing on a game that is fundamentally sound with as many low-risk / high-reward options as we can muster…

However, at other times - we should be training in a way that is simply playful, fun and primed for the highlight reel 🎞️. You know, like hitting a scissor sweep into a berimbolo…

Grab a cuppa ☕️ and notepad 📝 👇

The Not-So-Good Option:

The not-so-good option this week … might actually be you? 🧐 I joke, I joke 😏 - I’d bet my belt that our readers are all solid training partners - but we all know that not everyone is.

From cranking subs on hard and fast to going 100% right after saying, ‘Let’s just flow, hey?’ - Jordan Presinger takes us through some of the classic ‘bad partner’ moves.

And look - if you see yourself in some of these, don’t sweat it; maybe he’s wrong? Or, maybe it's a good chance to reflect and adjust. No one’s perfect, right!?👇

YOU WIN, WE WIN!

Sharing Is Caring 🫵

Hey! - this is your chance to do a damn good deed and help us out while also scoring yourself some sweet sweet rewards for doing so! Win-Win baby!

All we ask for is that you share our newsletter with some of the other BJJ savages in your circle - we will even give you heaps of cool stuff to say thanks! ⬇️

…with more to come!

One last thing before we wrap up: RunDot contacted us this week and asked if we would run an ad for them to help find people interested in participating in their 2024 Running Research Project.

If any of you jits-fiends like to run for some cardio, it could be cool as they are also offering 2 free months of run training for those that qualify. Anyway - here’s the deets ⬇️ :
