... and what would happen if Gordon Ryan fought Jon Jones?

Welcome back to Tap Nap & Snap - the newsletter that didn’t think we’d ever live long enough to watch Craig & John shake hands. But here we are huh? 🤷
Rightio - here’s what we’ve got today:
How to check if you’ve achieved ‘Creonte’ status
Never eat a burrito before class. Never.
You guys ever played ‘Red Light Green Light’?
WHATS HAPPENING?
This Weeks Tap’s ✋, Nap’s 🥱 & Snap’s 🫰
We hear you. Time is money - you want your BJJ news, but you’ve got thangs to do … those training partners won’t tap themselves.
Here’s what’s doing the rounds in Jiu-Jitsu this week. Choose your own adventure. 👇
Gordon Ryan would destroy Jon Jones … as long as no one threw a punch.
Dana White is throwing $12 million dollars at BJJ … is this the next level of our sport being unlocked?
Pat Downey won’t compete at IBJJF again … and I think both parties are pretty happy about it.
Are you a ‘Creonte’? … here’s the official Gracie Barra criteria.
Craig Jones 🤝 John Danaher … but Gordon would still rather die.
Mica is a Flo Friend for years to come … so I guess he won’t be at CJI 2.
BJJ Mental Models is dropping bonuses … for those looking to live that jiu-jitsu lifestyle.
Find me a stronger blue belt … I’ll wait.
We will see Demetrious Johnson at CJI 2 … but on which side of the pit?
BJ Penn’s getting worse and worse … and it’s very sad to see.
Nicky Rod took a Big L … and Gordon couldn’t wait to throw shade.

QUESTION TIME
What Keeps You Up At 2 am?
Hitting that sweet spot between ‘damn I’m still hungry!’ and ‘I feel sick’ is an artform when it comes to eating before training 🤢
Figuring out how much and what’s good to eat before a hard session requires a bit of trial and error, and while it’s likely different for everyone - there is a universal law that applies to all of us … a giant burrito is never the answer 🙅
Depending on the time of day you train usually has a lot to do with what you eat before shooting off for training too.
For instance, most morning crew people are psychopaths that will eat nothing and just mainline coffee moments before rolling … while evening crew people have at least had the time to put some thought into eating a well-balanced snack before class (… whether or not they actually do is a different story though).
What about you? Do you have a 'pre-game ritual’ when it comes to eating before BJJ? Or are you more of a ‘whatevers in the fridge’ kinda grappler?
Over to you … 👇
This week’s big question
What do you eat before training? |
The last poll’s results:
Last time, we asked you - “Are you one of the bigger or smaller grapplers in your gym?”
🟨🟨🟨🟨⬜️⬜️ 🦍 I'm usually one of the larger mat maulers
🟨🟨🟨🟨⬜️⬜️ 🐁 Definitely on the smaller side - technique over size!
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 ⚖️ Pretty average - I get to play both games
There’s a few exceptions, but it looks like most of us are in the middle - working all angles of the game.
If you are the high-calorie heavyweight or calorie-capped weapon of your gym, remember to find ways to work on all angles of your game because at some point, you’ll find that bigger (or smaller) fish out there!

The Weekly Fix
Last time, Joey & JT went through the dangers of too much BJJ and how to better balance your training and recovery so you aren’t permanently rekt.
This week, we feature their most viewed video in history that has helped many mat newbies find their way a bit easier… 😬
The 5 Things I Wish I Knew At White Belt…
Starting jiu-jitsu is hard. In fact, getting your white belt might actually be the hardest step for many of us.
Walking in for your first class is pretty intimidating, and unless you find a way to love the sport pretty quickly, you might be gone as quick as you came!
There are a few key factors like the gym environment, your attitude, injury prevention and your ability to be embarrassed that will determine whether or not you are a flash in the pan - or a white belt who’s quickly obsessed and ready to get their first BJJ tattoo. 😎
Hit play on Bulletproof’s most watched episode ever to get some great tips that will help you in those early stages of BJJ and serve you for many years after as well.

FREAK FOR THE TECHNIQUE
Red Light Green Light
Let’s be honest - no one actually knows what ‘flow roll’ means.
When the coach says flow, half the class will move so slowly they may as well be asleep, while the other half are at 110% smash passing the snoozers.
There’s gotta be a better way. One that has a bit more structure to it, that sets a pace that everyone can understand. Maybe this is it?
