📰 Warning: BJJ tattoos may lead to many ragrets 🤦‍♂️

...and we've pre-prepared a speech for all you new Blue Belts

Welcome to Tap Nap & Snap - the newsletter that all too often wonders how different the world would’ve been if BJJ was introduced to the Roman Empire 🧐

Here’s what we’ve got today:

  • Does your jiu-jitsu ink stink? 😷 🤦‍♂️

  • You’ve heard of North-South, but what about East-West? 🧭

  • Gordon’s tummy is ok 😮‍💨 But his rib is cooked 😤

Things That Keep You Up At 2 AM:

Jiu Jitsu Ink 🖋

Just like BJJ itself, tattoos can be a unique form of artistic and individual expression that is powerful to behold and inspiring to look at 👀

However, also just like BJJ, tattoos can be a clumsy mess of poor technique that results in lifelong injuries and multiple ragrets 😬

Based on that logic, it stands to reason that the combination of BJJ and tattoos could result in some incredibly amazing art 🖼 - or … some truly terrible abominations.

everything I’ve seen so far sits heavily on the abomination side of the spectrum (although I have to give credit to ‘Jesus didn’t Tap Out😂) - but I’m open to having my mind changed… 🤷‍♂️

This week’s big question: ⬇️

Last time we asked you - “If Kade & Tye Fight For A ONE Championship Submission Grappling World Title - Who Wins!?”

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 Kade gets the win

⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️ Tye gets the win

⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️ There's no way I can pick, they are too evenly matched

Look out Tye, the TNS crowd reckon your brother has your number, but no matter who wins, I’d watch that one for sure 😎🔥

…and obviously, much much more

Do Less. No, Wait, Do More:

The Good Option: North-South. Meet, East-West 🤝

The North-South choke is a nice quick finish if you can get a clean wrap around the neck - BUT if your opponent gets some frames in and starts to turn in on you, all may be lost 😞

UNLESS…

You re-orient your compass 🧭 and transition your North-South choke into what Johnny D. is calling the East-West choke 🤷‍♂️

It’s a simple but effective transition - if you want to upgrade your North-South choke and keep a great fallback option in your back pocket, watch below as Danaher dishes out the details 👇

The Not-So-Good Option: The Gauntlet - but it’s a rock 🪨

For all the criticism that the BJJ belt gauntlet receives for being brutal, archaic and unnecessary - we can all be thankful that at no point in the jiu-jitsu journey, does anyone throw a giant stone at our back 😬

He suffers the blow with some pained meditative deep breathing 🧘‍♂️ and then hobbles off with a hunch that can only come from a few cracked vertebrae ☠️

Mike Tyson 🥊 sums it up like no one else can at the end of the clip though - check it out below 👇

The Cards To Keep An Eye On 👀 :

This week we are breaking our news section up to keep it sharper 🔪 and let you choose your own adventure! 🧳

The first section will highlight some of the awesome cards on the horizon - and the second part will showcase some short snippets of news from the week (as well as years gone by) - complete with links so you can go down the rabbit hole on the stuff that interest you 🐰

Two more big events coming up in the two biggest organisations we’ve got! 👇📺

This is one of the most stacked cards on the calendar for the end of the year, and even though we featured this one a few emails back, it’s worth another look as the main event has changed pretty significantly! 😬

Initially headlined by Gordon Ryan & Lucas Barbosa, a nasty rib injury has put Ryan on the sidelines for it and left a space for his teammate (& recent ADCC champion), Giancarlo Bodoni, to step up and save the day 🦸‍♂️

Kinda wild to see Gordon out with something other than a sore tummy…🤒

Who?: Giancarlo Bodoni vs Lucas Barbosa, Pedro Marinho vs Rafael Lovato Jr., Diogo 'Baby Shark' Reis vs Diego 'Pato' Oliveira, Tainan Dalpra vs Troy Russell, Helena Crevar vs Julia Maele & Luke Griffith vs Roosevelt Souza

When?: Nov 30

Where to watch? Flo Grappling

Not much info is available on the big-name competitors attending yet, but given the outrageous hotbed of BJJ talent that is kicking around Austin, you’d have to expect that some of the big dogs are coming out to play 🐕 🦴

Watch this space, we will name-drop drop as soon as they become available… 😎

Who?: Austin’s finest (probably)

When?: December 16

Where to watch? Flo Grappling

The Tap’s , Nap’s 🥱 & Snap’s 🫰From The Mats This Week:

We do the EuGoogle-ing so you don’t have to 💪 Here’s what caught our attention in the BJJ world recently:

Proud Mr Bean GIF by Working Title

Billed as the hottest new thing to drop from the IBJJF since…well, ever 🤷‍♂️, The Crown was supposed to bring together the best of the best, pay them more than ever and re-fire everyone’s love for the Gi! 🔥

There were a couple of solid matches but largely, it fell flat with too many wins coming from a few extra points or even just an advantage 😞

Another L for the Gi in the endless Gi vs. No-Gi debate…

Like him or loathe him - the biggest news on the BJJ scene this week is Gordon Ryan’s little ol’ rib 🤕

As mentioned above, he’s pulled out of the WNO 21 match against Hulk, but will also be out of the UFC Fight Pass Invitational event against Mason Fowler, scheduled for just a few days later 😬 *Mason breathes a giant sigh of relief*

There have been no announcements to the update of that UFC card yet but surely someone is waiting in the wings for their chance right!? 💥

It should come as no surprise at this point that Craig Jones was put on this earth to hang sh*t on anything that moves and occasionally compete in a jiu-jitsu tournament if the prize pot is juicy enough 💵

As a No-Gi purist, one of his favourite topics to shred to pieces is the Gi side of the sport - and to his credit, it’s always in new and inventive ways! 😀

This time around, he’s drawn the comparison between Gi BJJ & soccer - claiming they’re both obsessed with fake fouls, complaining to the referee, low scorelines and a whole lotta tears 😭

He does yield that people actually want to watch soccer though… ⚽️

Shots fired 👇

ADCC Oceania played out last weekend and sent through another 5 athletes for the 2024 showdown 🏆

With 3 previous ADCC vets 👴 getting their return ticket, the full cohort that made it through this round is:

  • 66 kg - Ethan Thomas

  • 77 kg - Kenta Iwamoto

  • 88 kg - Izaak Michell

  • 99 kg - Declan Moody

  • 99 kg+ - Josh Saunders

Are any of these guys the best in the world?? 🗺 Who outta this bunch has the best chance of winning their bracket?

Hit reply and let me know…
