QUESTION TIME
What Keeps You Up At 2 am?
I don’t mean to alarm you - but 2024 is pretty well licked. 🚨
All those dreams of getting 6-pack abs and CJI million-dollar prizes this year are over. However, the good news is there’s probably still time to get 6-pack beers and a Masters Division silver medal if you’re quick about it. 💨
But the even better news is that you can use the angst and disappointment you now harbour from your broken dreams of 2024 as fuel to launch yourself into 2025 with a ferocity and vigour, the likes of which you’ve never seen before 🔥… well, at least for the first half of January. 🤷♂️
And while you’re in this classic end-of-year wired state of inspiration and enthusiasm, why not apply a bit of it to your BJJ game and set some big, hairy goals to get after when you first hit the mats next year? 📝
Maybe you want to enter your first comp? It could be that you want to train 200 classes for the year!? Or, possibly, you think New Year’s goal setting is frivolous and rarely results in anything substantial.
Each to their own approach here … 👇
This week’s big question
Do You Have Any BJJ-Specific Goals Set For 2025? |
The last poll’s results:
Last time we asked you - “Have You Ever / Do You Train Another Martial Art?”
🟨🟨🟨⬜️⬜️⬜️ ✅ Yep - I also train ... (write in and let us know)
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 🚫 - Nope, just BJJ for me
No surprise to see we have a strong BJJ-lovin’ crowd here 💪, but we’ve also got our fair share of multi-sport menaces as well. ✅
A lot of boxing and kickboxing crossover, which is a great compliment to jiu-jitsu from a self-defence perspective … and one Tae Kwon Do student who wishes they could have that time back 😂 (#isthatyoujoerogan?)
WHATS HAPPENING?
This Weeks Tap’s ✋, Nap’s 🥱 & Snap’s 🫰
1.) TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK 🧑🤝🧑: … and might even make you a part-millionaire if you and ya buddies get the call up for CJI 2025. 💰
This week, Creg released a few more details on the plan for CJI #2, announcing that this time round, the focus will be on running a team-based Quintet-style tournament with “a few crazy superfights” to boot.
It’s looking like the plan is to draw the best of the best in from teams like 10th Planet, ATOS, Gracie Barra & Checkmate, with Craig even confident that New Wave can’t resist and will be joining the fracas. 🔥 As for whether or not Gordon Ryan will be team captain… well … 🤷 → more here.
2.) BELTS AREN’T QUITE WHAT THEY USED TO BE 😔: … isn’t exactly brand new news, but it seems to be a reinvigorated topic lately as a few more of BJJ’s old-school practitioners & personalities fire up their phones and post their thoughts on weak and watered-down belt promotions.
Jeff Glover, in particular, made his thoughts known on it this week by stating, ‘The days of the black belt are gone and not coming back’ and also going on to say, ‘Now we are giving black belts to 50-year-old women who would get destroyed by a teenager with zero grappling skills.’ 🤼
It should come as no surprise that not everyone agrees with this take, with figures like Chris Hauter & Craig Jones both stating they think there are many good reasons to give a belt well beyond being the most dangerous grappler in the room.
One recent promotion that really embodies the ‘no one agrees philosophy’ is the jump to brown belt for New Wave’s Helena Crevar. After spending an eternity as a black-belt-smashing blue belt, she’s barely had 3 months on the purple belt before rocketing straight to brown! Many people are stoked for her, but, as you’d imagine, other people have … some opinions 😤… → more here.
3.) YOU CAN HAVE YOUR SAY 📣 : … by casting your vote for the best grapplers and matches of 2024, as awarded by FloGrappling. 🏆
From Kade & Nicky Rod claiming millionaire status at CJI to Adele and Kaynan tearing up ADCC, there have been some epic performances and world-class events play out this year. Not to mention some wiiiild submissions like Dante Leon taking out Mica Galvao and Hokage landing THIS armbar. 🤯
With the categories of best male/female grappler, best breakout grappler, best submission and best match of 2024, you can cast your vote and help decide who gets the pick ⛏️… → more here.

The Weekly Fix
Last time, Joey & JT gave some great pointers on how to deal with that first big BJJ injury that can, unfortunately, take many grapplers out of the sport. 😎
This week, the boys dive deep on the podcast about the fallout from Kron Gracies’ recent UFC loss and what it might mean for BJJ in the MMA world. 😬
Is BJJ no longer good for MMA?!
In the last newsletter edition, we touched on Kron’s heavy UFC 310 loss at the hands of Bryce Mitchell. It was ugly … to say the least.
This was his redemption chance after a terrible BJJ-inspired display in his last fight - and he showed up, pulled guard 🤯 and got knocked out for it. And based on the BJJ world's response to it - it wasn’t just his loss; it was jiu-jitsu’s loss.
As Rickson’s son, Kron has come from jiu-jitsu royalty and entered the UFC with super high expectations to become BJJ’s best prospect at the highest levels of MMA… and, needless to say - it doesn’t look like this prophecy will come to pass. 🧙♂️
There’s been many arguments online (*shock horror!) about whether or not this means BJJ has lost its edge in mixed martial arts or if Kron is just not quite what we hoped he’d be.
In the video above ⬆️, the boiz give a great breakdown, frame their take on it and go into the nuances of what it all means for our beloved sport … 🔥

WHAT’S SO FUNNY?
The Meme Open Mat:
Some things are even too hard for Santa! 🎅…
Happy holidays you filthy savages …
I am so smart. SMRT…
It took a lot of failing to continue failing…
LET’S GET TECHNICAL
The Good Option:
Craig Jones has a whole series of escapes that can only be categorised as - ‘just don’t believe in it’. He’s like a flat earther that’s just flown around the world. 🌍
He’s famous for just standing up out of side control and ignoring De La Riva guard - and today, he essentially ignores the Darce, sticks his arm out and takes the back. 🤯
I’m not sure if my body would struggle to move like that or if my mind is too trapped into thinking the Darce is real. 🧐 Grab a cuppa ☕️ and notepad 📝 👇
The Not-So-Good Option:
Maybe you’ve been playing a bit of standup at your gym lately and feeling like your foot sweeps are getting pretty good. 🧹
Maaaaybe you’ve even done a bit of judo before coming to BJJ, so you know that your foot sweeps are pretty good. 😎
Well, no matter how good your foot sweeps are, you’ll never be as good as this elephant. 🐘👇
YOU WIN, WE WIN!
